The Science Library should increase the number of textbooks available

Ever had the problem of not being able to borrow a textbook from the science library, especially during test and examination periods? At times, even the RBR textbooks have long waiting lists. I had, and this problem often leaves me perturbed and stressed because I could not refer to the textbooks to clarify my doubts quickly (time is of the essence during examination periods).

Hence, I feel that it is imperative that the problem of insufficient textbooks in the science library should be addressed. The general research question is whether students would urge the library management to increase the number of textbooks made available in the science library. A possible hypothesis could be: Increasing the number of textbooks in the science library would increase students' productivity during revision especially during examination periods.

This is a problem that is close to many students' hearts, and an attitudinal survey should be done amongst science students to gather their views so that a report could be submitted to the library's management and the Science Dean's office. With convincing data from the survey, it would be a strong basis to persuade the Dean's office and the library management to consider increasing the number of copies of textbooks in the science library, so that students would not need to engage in the rat race of reserving and hiding textbooks.

Hi Jaymie,

Snatching and reserving books are indeed situations that will really get on my nerves at times especially during the exam periods. From my past experiences, I remembered there is once I needed a RBR books urgently and both the RBR books is out on loan. At the other end of the library, I saw a guy who is holding on to the RBR book that I was looking for, but the book was resting on his table.

It personally felt that you can survey on what are some of the reasons that student borrowed RBR books for the whole full 2hours too, example, are they using it to photocopying, or reserving for friends? I felt that increasing numbers of book in the library do help to lighten the tension a little but not totally. The possible problem statement is to determine whether the presence number of RBR books in the library is sufficient or not.

Overall, I find that the research topic is quite feasible; however, you can extend your targeted audience to all NUS students not just only the science students, as students from other faculty do play a role too.

Hi Jaymie,

Personally I seldom borrow books from the library. However from school mates and professors, I know that the number of copies for a particular book is not high. For example, in a Pharmacy module I'm taking this semester, our Professor had advised not to purchase the textbook but to borrow it from the library. However, there is only 1 copy there. I can just imagine the queue for it and that could really deter students from wanting to read it at all.

I feel that most students would agree to your proposal since there is no harm in increasing the number of textbooks, other than the increase in funding needed. Thus perhaps the topic would not be a highly controversial one. However as you have mentioned, a survey would be necessary, as a form of feedback, in order to persuade the library management for a change.

Hi Jaymie!

This is indeed a topic that voice out our concerns about the shortage of RBR textbooks, especially for some modules. I have heard of how some students will spend time planning how to get the textbook they want during the examination period.

A survey is essential for this topic so that we can get to the root of the problem. Is it really the shortage of textbooks or is it some borrowing habits of science students that are causing textbooks hard to lay our hands on? Solutions can then be suggested to improve this problem. The general research question perhaps can be rephrased to “Do students feel that the textbooks in the science library should be increased?”

Overall, this topic is quite feasible, though some improvements can be done to make the response to the research question more unpredictable.
